WATCH THIS SEVERANCE EDIT SET TO MARY OLIVER’S “WILD GEESE”
Source Material: Severance (Apple TV+)
Poem: “Wild Geese” by Mary Oliver
Music: “Anything” by Adrianne Lenker
Year: 2025
THE CONCEPT
This edit pairs Severance with Mary Oliver’s poem “Wild Geese”, a piece widely known for its meditation on self-acceptance and belonging.
I wanted to explore how the poem’s themes resonated with the character of Helly R. This character is trapped inside a system that denies her autonomy, yet she keeps pushing toward selfhood with righteous determination. That clear fit between characterization and poetry is what drives the concept behind this character study.
CREATIVE APPROACH
Because the poem is the emotional center of the piece, the editing needed restraint.
I avoided flashy transitions for this edit because I wanted to keep the viewer’s attention on the words and let the imagery deepen them. This way, the text leads, and the visuals support. Some layers and effects are still present, but I used them sparingly.
Each selected shot is there because it reflects something in the poem’s language or in Helly’s emotional arc. The result is quieter than some of the faster, lyric-driven edits in my portfolio, but that restraint is the point: the edit is designed to make viewers sit with the words, and with Helly, at the same time.
